Catechetical Classes and Programs (CCD)

Our catechetical programs begin in Grade 1 and extend to Grade 8. Students who complete this program of studies are thus prepared to complete initiation into the Catholic faith through the sacrament of Confirmation in Grade 8. Please note that classes are available only to registered Saint Kilian Parishioners.

Faith Formation Program Offerings and Options

In our on-site programs, students attend CCD in classrooms located in the Saint Kilian Parish Center. They share classroom space with Saint Kilian Parish School (Pre-K to 8) and have access to much of the technology provided in the building. We also offer a Family Centered Program. The Diocese of Pittsburgh curriculum will be followed through the Loyola Press, Finding God textbook series for grades 1 through 7 and  the Ascension Press, Chosen textbook for grade 8. All grades will include instruction on the Catholic Vision of Love (CVOL). Parents can review the material that will be presented to students online.

Below are the class dates and other required meeting dates and information for the 2018-2019 Faith Formation Year - please note that all times are TENTATIVE pending possible changes due to On Mission. Please be prepared for the possibility of a Sunday class time adjustment or shift.

Grades 5-8 homework can be turned in at any Family Centered meeting, Jr. SKY meeting, at the front desk, or by leaving it in the drop-box just inside the double-doors to the front desk (ATTN: Jo Scheller). All homework for the year is due by May 30, 2019.

Jr. SKY Requirement for Grades 5 - 8
Jr. SKY is our youth ministry program and meets twice a month, with a mix of social, service and catechetical events. In lieu of onsite meetings, students in Grades 5-8 are required to attend three (3) Jr. SKY sessions of their choosing throughout the 2018 - 2019 year. Events beginning July 1, 2018 through Jr. SKY count towards the required three (3) sessions for the 2018 - 2019 year (this includes social events, regular meeting nights, and the monthly St. John’s Bingo service project). Attendance is taken at these sessions and is recorded to track participation. Permission to participate in Jr. SKY is required - a separate emergency/registration form is used during all meetings. Click here to complete this form online (this is in addition to registering for your CCD/Faith Formation Program). Click here for more information regarding Jr. SKY and for the Jr. SKY schedule of meetings and events.

*Alternative Options for Fulfilling the Jr. SKY Requirement
Religious events or service activities may be substituted in place of the Jr. SKY required sessions. Ideas include: attending a Passion Play, visiting a Basilica or attending a religious concert (examples of religious events) OR volunteering at a food bank like the Kilian Cupboard, collecting items for donation from your neighbors, visiting a nursing home, making fleece blankets (examples of service projects), etc. Each activity can count as a substitution for a Jr. SKY event. When the student has completed their alternative activity, they will need to email a paragraph of reflection to Jo Scheller with a summary of the completed activity or project, what they thought about the experience, and how it is pertinent to their faith life. Once received, an email confirmation will be sent to let you know that the event has been recorded (note: only alternative events done outside of Jr. SKY need write-ups).

IMPORTANT! NEW THIS YEAR: PLEASE READ the information regarding early dismissals, absences, and the DRESS CODE.

Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (except Friday, when dismissal is at 1:00 pm)
Dates for 2018: July 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 (Monday-Friday)

Students will also receive instruction in the Catholic Vision of Love program required by the Diocese of Pittsburgh for all students in grades 5-8. Drop off for students will be at the cafeteria entrance to the school. Pickup will be at the Church as final events each day will be held in the church.

In addition to attending the Summer Program, students will be required attend three Jr. SKY events for the 2018 - 2019 school year. Failure to attend three sessions will be considered when registering for future Summer Programs.

Due to the popularity of this program and the limited number of spaces, we are not able to accommodate all who apply. Because this program is a concentrated catechesis, a zero-tolerance policy for disruptive behavior will be enforced resulting in removal of the student from this program and placement in the Family Centered Program for the coming year. Please advise your child of this policy. Friday dismissal is at 1:00 pm.

NO EARLY DISMISSALS
We expect students to be present for all sessions. This program is intended for students who can be present for the entire week. There will be no early dismissals or absences. If your summer sports schedules, camps, vacations, and other activities conflict with the dates and times of this program, please enroll in one of the school year options.

FRIDAY
Friday’s session will conclude with Mass at 12 noon and pickup at 1 pm.

DRESS CODE
Parents: Please note that these requirements are not optional or negotiable. Please read carefully so that students follow the code. Students and parents must accept the dress code policy when registering for this program.

  1. 1. The length of skirts, skorts, and shorts must extend below the student's fingertips when the student's arms are extended at his/her sides. This is known as the ‘fingertip’ rule.
  2. Students wearing spandex or other clingy leggings must have a skirt or shirt over the top that complies with the fingertip rule.
  3. No spaghetti straps, backless shirts, tank tops or muscle shirts.
  4. No gap should exist between the bottom of the shirt and the top of the pants when the student is sitting or standing.
  5. Clothing cannot have crude or vulgar slogans or images. Promotion of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, hate speech, violence, or weapons is also not allowed.
  6. Exposed undergarments are not allowed. Examples include bra straps not covered by tops, underwear beneath baggy pants, sheer clothing, or even undergarments showing through rips and holes in clothing. For this reason, holes and rips in shirts or pants located above the ‘fingertip rule’ length is not allowed.
  7. Tops that display cleavage are not allowed.
  8. Slippers or pajamas are not allowed.

Students who arrive on-site in a state of non-compliance with the dress code will not be permitted to attend or remain in class. Parents will be contacted to either pick up the child or bring a change of clothes. Summer CCD students have a mandatory attendance rule for the week of class so careful thought should be given to how the student dresses so that attendance is not compromised.

Confirmation in the Catholic Church

Confirmation Overview
At Saint Kilian Parish, the Sacrament of Confirmation occurs for eighth graders in the Spring. The date of Confirmation is usually announced in December or January by the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Parents are emailed once we receive that date. The Rite of Confirmation does not include a Mass and usually lasts 90 minutes or less.

Confirmation Rehearsal
All candidates are required to attend the rehearsal for Confirmation. The date of the rehearsal will be announced once we received the date for Confirmation from the diocese. The rehearsal will be held on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks prior to the date of confirmation. The afternoon will last about 1½ hours and include instruction, prayer, reflection and rehearsal. A parent or sponsor must accompany the candidate to this afternoon session.

Sacramental Information
For more information regarding the sacrament of Confirmation, click here.

2018 Confirmation Details
Our Parish will celebrate Confirmation on Saturday, May 12, 2018  with Bishop David Zubik as the confirming Bishop. The Rite of Confirmation will not include a Mass and should last approximately 90 minutes.

Due to the large size of our confirmation class, we offer two times to receive the sacrament, 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Once a particular session is full, you will need to choose the remaining time.

A rehearsal and afternoon of reflection will be held Sunday, April 29, 2018 from 2 pm to 3:30 pm in the Church. A parent or sponsor should accompany the student to the rehearsal.

As a reminder, if you have not submitted the information form (for choosing a sponsor and Confirmation name) for your son or daughter, you must do so at this link before March 1st.

A parent meeting is scheduled for either November 29th or December 6th at 7:15 pm in the Church to review the information previously emailed to parents. While this meeting is for parents only, children are welcome to attend. You need only attend one of these dates. Attendance of the parent meeting is optional as we have tried to include all details in the Confirmation Information Packet below which contains:

  1. Celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation
  2. Information on Choosing a Sponsor
  3. Choosing a Confirmation Name
  4. Service Hours Requirements
  5. Confirmation Sponsor Verification Form

2018 Confirmation Details
The date of Confirmation is usually announced in December or January by the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Parents will be emailed once we receive that date.
